inheritance
rescuing memories
i have been making cyanotype projects for decades
including these cyanotypes using family textiles both as the subjects and surfaces.
when close family members died i began inheriting and photographing things from their lives that connected me to them. the series started as large format black and white photographs. many of the objects have strong memories for me that photographing them revived and saved. these cyanotypes incorporate some of the actual family textiles into the process.
i found and photographed my mother’s grade school lunch box with its contents in my grandmother’s attic, a tiny box of the teeth the tooth fairy saved, as well as many of the lace and textiles made, used and worn by my family decades ago.
see my mother’s gloves, grandmother’s tea cup and a letter from my father to my mother-part of the black and white still life series at: https://shevafruitman.com/art/photography/content/IMG_4931_large.html
